Graphics card
« on: March 28, 2017, 05:25:27 PM »
Current card seems to be on the way out.
Looking at an upgrade with a new card, currently running AMD HD 6900 Series.
Thinking of a switch to Nvidia but no probs staying with AMD
Any ideas, recommendations, what to avoid etc
Obviously price wise I'm looking for the best value, but for now just looking for advice, will consider the budget later.

I'm runnings an nvidia 970. But my next build will definitely be an all AMD build. With the new ryzen cpu finally giving intel a run for their money. But at such a good price. But i myself haven't used ATI cards for such a long time, I have no idea what their newest cards are like. Will do more research when that time comes i guess..

You must have a lot more money to spend on PC Parts than me Samps :icon_blackeye:
Would love one of those though

You did say that budget was not your primary concern :-D

At the moment the desktop hardware market has plateaued somewhat. There are really "little" gained at the top end with more effort going into cheaper ($$) and lower power for the same processing ability.

Graphics card wise. I would pick a $ value ($350-$600) and look to spend that every 18-24 months.

The ATI and AMD based processors have always been the innovative alternatives to Nvidia and Intel
ATI and AMD would normally release to market 2-4 months after the others with a 35% price difference and force the market price down.

BUT when they release before, they have usually been found not to be to as ready for the market as they would like. Usually needing rapid and ongoing software patching for a while, So again if going for ATI look at something 6 months old, it will be cheaper and stable.

OK Looking at this at the moment
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/37096/asus-rog-radeon-rx-480-strix-gaming-oc-8gb

Thoughts? good ? bad ? value? can do better?

Looked at this also
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/35763/asus-rog-geforce-gtx-1070-strix-gaming-8gb-oc

or even this
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/36277/asus-rog-geforce-gtx-1080-strix-aura-8gb

Price difference is considerable but not really a huge problem. Thinking they may be a bit of overkill.

Opinions ?

For the huge difference in price, Is it worth staying with the ATI (AMD) card.

Both 8Gig 256 Bit DDR5 Memory

1330MHz  $379 (AMD)
1657MHz  $639 (Nvidia)

Me I would go with AMD not worth the $$$ for not much more performance

My 2 cents

Totally agree, as per my post above, buy "the next" AMD card in about 2 years for again about the $400 mark. put the ~$200 you saving for it into the piggy bank for next time
